History of the Area
In May 2001 Nolin Lake State Park opened to the public. The area surrounding Nolin Lake State Park is topographically diverse. Edmonson County is part of cave country. Mammoth Cave is the largest explored cave system in the world. Since its discovery by early settlers in the late 1700s, millions of visitors have come to explore the more than 340 miles of known passageways. Mammoth Cave National Park covers 51,000 acres. Edmondson County was formed January 12, 1825 and named for Capt. John Edmondson of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of the River Raisin in the War of 1812.
