Located north of New Hampshire's central plateau, lies the White Mountains National Forest, cloaked with forests and laced with streams. Among the ranges and ridges are the highest mountains in the Northeast, the Presidential Range, which culminate in the bare granite summit of 6,288-foot Mount Washington, Mounts Adams, Jefferson, Monroe and Madison also exceed 5,000 feet in elevation. The Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire runs mainly through the White Mountains, including a section along the Presidential Ridge that is the longest section of the trail above the treeline.
Barnes Field Campground 
Located 6 miles south of Gorham, New Hampshire, at the base of New England's tallest peak, the historic Barnes Field Campground provides a scenic and private space for organizations, families and others to gather.
The campground is one of a few in the area that remains open in winter, providing first-come, first-served winter camping for individuals

Been to the White mountains twice now,from Ohio. Absolutely love this area. Very clean and trails are marked and maintained very well.
Thinking of finding a part time job for a Season there... 
The white mountain National Forest is not a national Park. It is a working forest administered by the Forest Service, a subgroup of the US dept of Agriculture. As such they manage the forest on the basis of multiple uses and a sustained yield of timber. Timber harvests are part of the management edict.
