History of the Area
Located in Merced County, California, the park was established in 1953. It's named after George J Hatfield, a former state senator and lieutenant governor of California from 1935 to 1939. The area is known for its natural beauty including riverfront access and oak woodland habitats. Over time it has become popular among campers due to facilities like picnic areas and campsites.

-Turlock Lake Connector Route : Not an official hiking route within state park boundaries , this pathway connects George J.Hatfield Recreation Area with Turlock lake state recreation area via levee top road - approximately three miles each way if starting at southernmost point of merced river trail
