Grab your mountain bike. You'll want to head straight for the Itusi Trail system because its 30.5 miles of fast, flowing singletrack will absolutely test your suspension and your lungs. It is pure dirt-flying fun. If bikes aren't your thing, the park sits right on the edge of North Carolina's largest man-made lake, meaning you can launch a kayak or try to hook a massive largemouth bass. Don't forget your sunscreen either. The park actually has a dedicated swimming beach with real sand, which is a massive win when the Carolina summer heat hits ninety-five degrees in July.

Staying overnight is dirt cheap. Instead of pitching a tent on the hard ground, you can rent one of their camper cabins that come with air conditioning, which is basically cheating but totally worth it. No Wi-Fi out there, though. Kids can actually burn off their crazy energy on the playground or learn about native wildlife inside the visitor center while you finally get a moment of peace. It's just a solid escape. So, pack some hot dogs, load up the trunk, and go touch some grass off Interstate 77.
History of the Area
Long ago, small-scale farmers scraped a living out of this stubborn, red clay dirt. They planted cotton. By the 1950s, Duke Power started buying up these worn-out family plots. When they finally closed the dam gates in 1963, rising river waters swallowed up old homesteads, family cemeteries, and rich bottomland fields to create a massive reservoir. But they saved some land. The power company donated 1,328 acres of the remaining shoreline to the state. This happened in 1962. Officials opened the park to the public in 1965.

You can actually still find traces of those old farming days if you look closely. Deep in the woods, old agricultural terraces still wrinkle the forest floor. They stopped erosion. Hikers on the popular multi-use trails often cross old, abandoned roadbeds. Generations ago, wagon wheels carved these deep ruts as families traveled to local grist mills, churches, or country stores. Nature took over eventually. Now, second-growth pine and hardwood trees shade these forgotten pathways. It is a quiet reminder of the hard lives lived here before the water rose.
