....moreTexas is home to four national forests-Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine and Sam Houston-and one national grassland-the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grassland.
The history of these lands begins with their original inhabitants: various Native American tribes who lived off the land for centuries before European settlers arrived. During the 1800s and early 1900s, much of this territory was privately owned by individuals or companies involved in timber production due to East Texas's dense pine forests.
By the late 19th century, extensive logging had led to significant deforestation across many areas that are now protected as part of Texas' federal forestlands. In response to widespread concerns over resource depletion nationwide, Congress passed The Weeks Act in 1911 authorizing purchase of private land for conservation purposes; thus began a new era where previously exploited tracts were gradually acquired by the government from lumber companies and other private owners throughout subsequent decades.
These acquisitions eventually formed what we know today as Angelina (established in October 1936), Davy Crockett (October 1936), Sabine (December 1934), Sam Houston Forests(September1927). Each named after important figures related either local lore or broader United States history - such as statesman Samuel "Sam" Houston - they collectively span hundreds thousands acres providing habitat countless species wildlife while offering recreational opportunities like hiking camping fishing hunting enthusiasts alike
