You can enjoy fishing in a 120-acre lake, home to species like largemouth bass and channel catfish. Other fish include crappie, sunfish, wipers and saugeye. Fishing from the shoreline or boat is allowed but requires proper licensing. A marina offers boating equipment rentals for convenience.

Shawnee Mission State Park offers numerous picnic areas with tables and grills, three shelters for rent, and a large beach area.
The park offers a variety of birding opportunities with over 200 species recorded. It features diverse habitats such as woodlands, grasslands and water bodies attracting different types of birds including migratory ones. Birdwatchers can explore the five-mile Gary L Haller trail or use designated observation points around the lake for spotting aquatic birds like herons and ducks.
