Nestled in northeast Missouri, Wakonda State Park, composed of land that once was mined of gravel used to surface Missouri's secondary highways, has been transformed into a recreation area featuring six lakes, hiking and bicycling trails, and a rare sand prairie.

The clear lake waters attract thousands of waterfowl such as Canada geese, snow geese, mallards, snowy egrets and great blue herons during the migratory seasons. The lakes also offer anglers a chance at catching largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Two of the lakes have boat ramps. Non-motorized jonboats and canoes can be rented at the park office.

Sand that was dug up during the gravel excavations was piled in small mounds, creating a landscape of rolling sand ridges that have developed into a rare sand prairie. Also comprised of the excavated sand is the 20,000-square-foot swimming beach along Wakonda Lake, providing a great place to lounge in the sun or get in a game of sand volleyball.

Seventy-nine campsites, both basic and electric, are available to guests wishing to extend their stay. Wakonda State Park also has 10 recreational trailers available for rent. Both the campground and recreational trailers are nestled near one of the park's lakes.
Swimming
Sand from the quarries helped to create the state park system's largest natural sand swimming beach along Wakonda Lake. The 20,000-square-foot beach offers plenty of room to lounge in the sun or get in a game of sand volleyball. A snack bar is located near the beach.

The beach is open from Memorial day weekend through Labor day weekend from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There is no lifeguard on duty, so swimming is at your own risk. There is a showerhouse and restroom facility located at the beach for your convenience.
Boating
Boat Launch:

A concrete boat launch is available at Wakonda Lake and a gravel boat launch is at Agate Lake. There are no boat launch fees at the park. A 10 horsepower engine maximum is allowed on both Wakonda and Agate lakes. Quartz, Granite and Boulder lakes only allow boats with electric motors, and no boats are allowed on Jasper Lake.
Fishing
