A favorite park of mine since I was 14 - If you like wetlands than this is a paradise!
so many different birds to observe and enjoy!
I did notice a large colony of Nutria the last time I was there in Oct 2014. Makes me worry that the little strip of asphalt will be further compromised by their tunneling. If you can send me any info on this I would be very interested.
When In Ashe County.. - Views from Mt Jefferson are breathtaking - even when one is half-way up and it starts to snow. This is a must for us when we visit Ashe County .. sometimes we meet no one - but recently [Oct 2015] we met several wonderful souls - enjoying the mountain air and the views!
childhood memories at its best - Gods country. Having grown up in Dare Co. and cutting my teeth on Milltail Creek and those logging roads with my Grandfather Ken Ward, it is refreshing to see the area much as it looked to me almost fifty years ago. The most peaceful place on earth.
Beautiful state park - We stopped by the office , the ranger gave us a lot of very useful information & suggestions for our visit. We were very impressed & really enjoyed our walk to Moccasin Landing. We are already looking forward to our next visit
Back Country Horse Riding at Its BEST - I have been riding the horse trails in Uwharrie for 17 years. Yes, they are challenging, but that is the backwoods experience that most horseback Trail Riders are craving, not the manicured trails like at other parks and forests. Always something new to see every time I camp. Canebrake Horse Camp is a very nice facility. Have noticed some nice upgrades in the last year or two. Found that there is now a chapter of Back Country Horsemen in the forest helping to maintain the campground and the trails. WAY TO GO!
